Welcome to Encinitas

Catch a wave in this surfing paradise on the sea.

Approximately 25 miles north of San Diego lies Encinitas, an oceanfront gem with miles of sandy beaches, sidewalk cafes, a bustling downtown shopping district, and great food. Many eateries and coffee shops are located along the 101 and are just blocks from the beach. Scenic trails overlooking the Pacific, meditation gardens, community parks, and a relaxed environment have made Encinitas a world renowned surfing paradise.

Situated almost perfectly halfway between Carlsbad and San Diego, the Encinitas region was first inhabited by native tribes. Incorporated in 1986, the city was at first two separate communities which were then combined later. In more modern times, Encinitas features a vibrant downtown district, unmatched scenery, high-performing schools and is one of the best places for surfers to call home.

What to Love

  • Encinitas is one of the best surfing towns in the United States
  • Streets lined with quaint boutiques and coastal eateries
  • Trails, beaches, and parks are abundant, ensuring locals have plenty of chances to enjoy the temperate year-round climate

Local Lifestyle

Residents are hard-pressed to find a more picture-perfect ideation of a Southern California surf town. Surf shops, locally roasted coffee, seafood tacos, and coastal-inspired Mexican cuisine are in no shortage. Most of these businesses are family-owned and operated. Encinitas has recently experienced a high level of growth, but the town has retained its charm and close, communal vibe over the years. La Paloma Theater is one of the oldest and most adored sites in town. Farmers’ markets and other celebrations are held within the town’s many parks. Of course, surfing is a popular activity and lucky locals enjoy 300 days of sunshine throughout the year.

Dining, Entertainment, and Shopping

Thanks to its waterfront location, Encinitas has access to some of the best seafood anywhere. Many local eateries are situated on the beach offering diners scenic views of the Pacific while they enjoy the fresh Californian fare. Parks in town often hold various events throughout the year, while the 101 is lined with unique shops, not far from miles and miles of beaches.

Waverly is a fresh, bright eatery near the Pacific in Cardiff Town Center, famous for its brunch and cocktail menu. Guests enjoy progressive American cuisine with European influences, like duck meatballs, crème brûlée French toast, and an extensive cocktail selection. Other delectable seafood can be found at Pacific Coast Grill, not far away. Located right on the beach, some of their best dishes include sea bass, shrimp dumplings, and lobster tacos. Make yourself at home and enjoy the view with an ice-cold beverage from their extensive list of offerings.

On the south side of town, Sea + Wander is a popular boutique carrying women’s and children’s clothing, body care, and home accents. Sea + Wander believes in selling a wide array of high-quality, sustainable products, with a much larger selection than what is normally found at most other boutiques.

Of course, surfing is arguably the most popular activity in Encinitas. However, other outdoor recreation on land is in ample supply. The San Diego Botanic Gardens, just east of Interstate 5, is a 37-acre oasis featuring miles of trails with over 5,000 different species of plants on display. Just next door, the Butterfly Farms were established to provide refuge for the declining butterfly population. They are dedicated to conservation and education and offer tours to the public.

Things To Do

Encinitas benefits from its sunny, Southern California location and the 300+ days of sunshine it provides each year. Naturally, several community parks are popular places to spend leisure time. Encinitas Community Park and its 44 acres of sporting fields, skating ramps, and wide-open green space is a popular choice. Within the park is Poods Skatepark, widely considered to be the best skatepark in all of SoCal. Many of these parks host events throughout the year such as Oktoberfest and Music By The Sea. Oktoberfest features authentic Bavarian brews and bits, dancing, games, and other vendors. Once a month throughout other months of the year, Music By The Sea is held at the Encinitas Library. In the past, Music By The Sea has showcased the talents of some of Southern California’s most gifted artists.

Schools

Encinitas is home to some of Southern California’s best-performing schools. A few of these are:
