Welcome to Del Mar
An elevated standard of living on the Pacific Ocean.
For those looking to enjoy the finer things in life, look no further than Del Mar. Fine dining, upscale boutiques, and luxury resorts are abundant and often come with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean. Spanish for “by the sea,” Del Mar is just 20 miles north of San Diego. The city does enjoy Southern California surf culture but also indulges in other high-class recreation, such as horse races over the summer.
Since the golden age of film, Del Mar has been a destination for Hollywood’s elite. Homes situated along the coastline enjoy ocean views and close proximity to beaches, yacht clubs, and oceanfront golf courses. A smaller community in comparison to some of its neighbors, Del Mar boasts high-rated schools, wonderful weather, and the chance for its residents to live the high life by the sea, 365 days a year.
What to Love
Local Lifestyle
Leisure time in Del Mar is usually spent outdoors, thanks in part to a temperate year-round climate. Yacht clubs, beaches, parks, and golf are all popular activities. In the summer, guests gather at the Del Mar Race Track. Nearby, the San Diego County Fair is held at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Attendance has reached well over a million over recent years making this the largest fair in the United States, and one of the largest in the world. Rides, live music performances, and a healthy offering of fair foods have made this a staple in Del Mar life since 1880.
Dining, Entertainment, & Shopping
Del Mar residents enjoy the finer things in life, and dining is no exception. Fresh seafood prepared in a number of creative methods is amply available, but casual options are still highly-desired for easygoing days spent in flip-flops and board shorts.
Jake’s, located on Coast Boulevard, specializes in seafood, American classics and is well-known for its weekend brunch. Their killer location offers ocean views from the patio and bar, which patrons enjoy while dining on fish tacos, calamari, ceviche, and “Surfing Steak,” a prime sirloin topped with chimichurri sauce and herb-grilled jumbo shrimp.
More casual seafood is served as Seasurf Fish Co. Beer-battered fish and chips, cioppino, po’boys and poke are popular options, along with their daily happy hour consisting of $1.50 shucked oysters. Viewpoint Brewing on the San Dieguito Lagoon is a pet-friendly brewery serving a seasonal rotation of craft beers and elevated pub favorites.
The Del Mar Plaza is an outdoor shopping mall with plenty of coffee shops, restaurants, and events held throughout the year, such as group fitness classes, storytime for children, trick-or-treating and more. Just north of town, Belly Up is one of the region’s best music venues. Concertgoers usually show up a bit early to drop in for dinner and drinks at the tavern next door.
Things To Do
Del Mar weather is agreeable and sunny all year long. Average temperatures in the mid-60s allow for a high number of outdoor events and recreation. The Del Mar Racetrack hosts horse races each summer, attracting visitors from all over Southern California. In true Del Mar fashion, trackside dining and private suites are available for patrons to enjoy the races in style. In addition to the Racetrack, locals enjoy close proximity to several parks, beaches, and other lively events, such as Taste of Del Mar, a festival celebrating the top restaurants in the community and many different wine samplings from some of California’s favorite vineyards.
